Self-assessment tool

Before you start:

  • please make sure your browser has pop-ups enabled so that you can generate your PDF
  • it may take around 20-30 seconds to generate your PDF
  • you may wish to keep copies of your answers in a text file in case you lose any work

This tool provides a simple, quick and effective way to understand how well you currently perform against the Professional Standards for teachers and trainers working in further education and training.

The standards provide a common framework for tracking development and this resource enables you to score yourself against each of the 20 standards and add comments. At the end, you can print a summary that includes charts that display your self-assessed skills.

The 20 standards are grouped into:
  • Professional skills
  • Professional values and attributes
  • Professional knowledge and understanding
How to start your assessment:
  1. Check the date on the top right of the form and select a new start date if appropriate.
  2. Rate yourself against each of the standards using the sliders.
  3. Hint text will appear when you hover over the scores to help you assess how well you are performing against each of the standards. A score of 1 suggests you are just meeting the standard and a score of 6 suggests you are performing well against the standard.
  4. Add comments for each standard to support your assessment.
  5. At the end you can print a summary that includes charts that display your self-assessed skills. Please note this tool does not save your responses so save your PDF for future reference.

It is important to recognise that unlike competencies which you either have or do not have, performance against the standards can develop over time, so you need to choose to work on the standards that are most relevant to your practice and learners.
