The changing nature of vocational education and practice

In a world that now revolves around access to free and instant information on a global scale, the landscape of vocational education is also rapidly changing, writes Amy Hollier.

In response to this, alongside the Government’s recent reforms of technical education in the Post-16 Skills Plan, University College Birmingham (UCB) propose a paradigm shift in its approach to the delivery of technical education through the project entitled 'Curriculum 2020' with support from the Education and Training Foundation's (ETF) Teach Too initiative.

UCB is a Further and Higher Education Institution which specialises in highly vocational programmes across four schools, The Business School, The College of Food, The School of Sport and Creative Services and The School of Education, Health and Community. As part of the Curriculum 2020 project, each of the four schools has undertaken a forensic analysis of curriculum content, consulted with leading industry specialists on the demands and challenges of modern-day industry practices and conducted a rigorous internal skills audit across each of the teaching teams in order to develop a comprehensive and targeted CPD plan.
