Dyslexia Awareness Week 2019

The ETF is marking Dyslexia Awareness Week 2019 with a reminder of the support it provides to practitioners working with learners with the condition. The week, which takes place from 7–13 October, is run by the British Dyslexia Association.

The ETF provides an extensive range of support for FE professionals working with learners with Special Educational Needs (SEN), including dyslexia. We encourage everyone to engage with our offer in order to develop awareness of neurodiverse learners’ needs.

Our dyslexia awareness raising course, for those who want to begin understanding the needs of those with the condition, next runs in London on 29 October 2019. Details are available on our booking website.

Our three Centres for Excellence in SEND focus on inclusive practice and unidentified or low–moderate SEN. With the dedicated themes of people, curriculum and community, they offer free support by leaders to leaders to encourage more organisations to see that if they take a strategic approach to meet the needs of all learners, everybody wins. Teachers and managers can join any of the communities of practice (both face to face and virtual) at the Centres to learn and share ideas on what works too.

Our SEND managers’ programme has a knowledge module to help you to understand how Education, Health and Care Plans work for learners, and our skills module helps develop leadership skills.

We also provide a range of resources – including an online taster session and guide to supporting learners with dyslexia – on the SEND specialist area of the Excellence Gateway site. There are also free online courses on supporting your learners with information, advice and guidance, work experience and engaging with employers on the SEND area of the Foundation Online Learning site.

As well as the support we provide, we also encourage conversation amongst professionals via our online community of practice on Twitter. This is a great way to learn from and support one another. Simply use the hashtag #SENDinFE in your tweets.
