SET works with DfE to build on parity between QTLS and QTS

Last week brought good news for both QTLS holders and future applicants. The Secretary of State, Justine Greening, recently announced that the Department for Education (DfE) is strengthening Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) for teachers training to work in schools. The Society for Education and Training (SET) welcomes this positive step forward.

Since the Government’s White Paper in March 2016 (Educational Excellence Everywhere) announced changes for QTS, SET has been working closely with the DfE to make sure that the parity between QTLS and QTS remains. This has always been a central strength of QTLS, in that the expertise and experience it demonstrates in a teacher working in the FE and training sector are recognised in law as equivalent to those of a teacher who has undertaken QTS in a school.

One of SET’s central missions is to raise and recognise high teaching standards, and maintaining parity and consistency between all parts of the education sector is key to achieving this: this was reflected in our launch of a new, enriched QTLS in September 2016, which mirrors the principles of the planned changes for QTS.

This means that QTLS is as valuable as ever and is widely recognised as the badge of professionalism for those working in the FE and skills sector. Current holders of QTLS will continue to be eligible to work in schools on the same terms as teachers who hold QTS, both before and after the changes to QTS are introduced.

Those who gain QTLS between now and then will be similarly eligible. And SET will be working as a key stakeholder with the DfE to build on the existing parity between these statuses and increase transferability between sectors to suit the needs of teachers, trainers, providers and learners.
