QTLS qualified member Afzal Sayed Munna tells us about his career and background.
Where do you work?
I am the Director of Business Development at Third Eye Communication Limited, an independent education provider mainly focusing on teacher training and young peoples’ personal and professional development. I am also working as a growth and educational oversight consultant assisting schools and colleges in UK and overseas on their quality management practice.
In addition to my above role, I am working as a Head of Academic Quality & Curriculum Development at Capital College UK and Head of Higher Education at Elegant International College in London, UK. My responsibility is to implement and administer all aspects of the academic and administration programme, including the management of the lecturing team and their performance.
How long have you been working in this sector?
I have been in this industry for seven years and I believe I am still a learner.
What does being a member of SET mean to you?
SET is a platform for me to upgrade my own personal and professional development that is required to be the best in the FE/HE sector.
Why did you choose teaching/training as a career and how did you get into it?
My motivation for teaching is based on the commitment to help others and the belief that teachers can change and transform minds. I have been engaged with education, development, training and community throughout my life. I have developed confidence in educating people of all ages, and in different areas of knowledge including business and learning skills. I have also experience working with organizations at managerial level, which has built my skills in problem solving, time management and the ability to work independently. I am also committed to personal learning and development. I started working as a MBA dissertation supervisor assistant in 2010 and was also working as a guest lecturer for Management Information Systems. Independently, I started working as a lecturer in February 2011 responsible for teaching HND Level 5 students at Essex International College. Two weeks after I started I was given an additional responsibility to teach postgraduate students. I then moved to Stanfords College UK where I was appointed as a senior lecturer and later to the higher position of working as a Head of Department, Travel and Tourism.
In September 2012 I established my own independent training company, THIRD EYE Communication Limited, with a vision to assist people in getting their teaching qualifications. In 2014 I joined Capital College UK as a Head of Academic Quality & Curriculum Development and 2015 at Elegant International College as a Head of Higher Education.
I enjoy all of my roles because of the variety of tasks and responsibilities. They also equip me with extended academic knowledge. Above everything I love teaching everyday and exploring new things with my learners.
What achievement are you most proud of?
I am proud of my learners and clients. I am happy when I see my learners are moving towards higher qualification or even working as a manager in a MNC. I was proud to be chosen by my supervisor, while still working on my Master Dissertation, to work with him as his assistant - back in 2010.
I am also proud to be on the shortlist of the SME Awards 2016, in the Entrepreneur of the Year category.
What has most surprised you about your career?
Initially I was surprised with my fast progression in the industry. I started my teaching career as a lecturer and within a year I was moved to take the role of departmental head, followed by a move to working as a head of academic quality/higher education.
What is your favourite food?
Grilled chicken and salad
Tell us one thing about yourself, not related to work
I love my family most and I feel fantastic when I am with them. I wish to live a very long time just to play with my son and see him grow, inch by inch.
