CPD modules on FOL and the Excellence Gateway

The following modules and resources on Foundation Online Learning (FOL) and the Excellence Gateway are available for practitioners to access free of charge and referenced to the Professional Standards.

1. Professional Standards ‘How to’ Guides: University of Wolverhampton

  • Professional Standard 1: Reflect on what works best in your teaching and learning to meet the diverse needs of learners.
  • Topic: Critical reflection, inclusive teaching and learning.
  • Resource: A video has been produced to reflect the core principles of critical reflection and the development of reflective practice.

2. Motivating Learners: Motivational Dialogue

  • Professional Standards 3 and 13: Inspire, motivate and raise aspirations of learners through your enthusiasm and knowledge. 
  • Topic: Motivating learners to succeed.
  • Resource: This set of resources for practitioners and leaners from NTLCP aims to improve motivation. The activities focus on being learner-centred and using motivational dialogue to achieve step changes, are versions of the 'Wheel of change' and are supported by guidance and materials.

3. Advancing Equality and Diversity 

  • Professional Standard 5: Value and promote social and cultural diversity, equality of opportunity and inclusion.
  • Topic: Equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Resource (1): This comprehensive learning programme, covering all protected characteristics, will equip staff with the understanding and skills to implement equality and diversity and community cohesion strategies in their own work and across their institutions.

  • Resource (2): Supporting learners with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND); resources include a self assessment, interactive guide and guidance on supporting dyslexic learners.

  • Resource (3):  Equality, diversity and inclusion in apprenticeships - this interactive course is designed to support apprenticeship front-line staff to engage and develop a diverse range of apprentices (and their employers) right the way through their apprenticeship journey.

4. Prevent for Practitioners 

  • Professional Standard 12: Understand the teaching and professional role and your responsibilities.
  • Topic: Professional role.
  • Resource: This resource provides a flexible way of learning more about the Prevent duty and what individuals and organisations in the FE sector need to do. Prevent for practitioners is one of four modules available on this subject and tailored for practitioners, support staff, leaders and managers, governors and board members.

5. Safeguarding and Safer Recruitment in Further Education

  • Professional Standard 14: Plan and deliver effective learning programmes for diverse groups or individuals in a safe and inclusive environment.
  • Topic: Safeguarding.
  • Resource: This course provides a flexible way of learning more about safeguarding and what organisations in the FE sector need to do to ensure all learners are kept safe. Using video, audio and interactive activities, the resource takes the user through five modules. This is followed by two assessments (see information below).

6. a) Enhancing your Personal Digital Skills b) Applying your Digital Skills in Teaching and Learning

  • Professional Standard 15: Promote the benefits of technology and support learners in its use.
  • Topic: Using ICT in teaching and learning.
  • Resource: Two courses designed to help improve your digital skills, building your confidence to use technology in the classroom, workshop or virtual learning environment.

7. Improving the Teaching of Maths and English

  • Professional Standard 16: Address the mathematics and English needs of learners and work creatively to overcome individual barriers to learning.
  • Topic: Development of personal maths and English skills, embedding maths in teaching and learning, GCSE, numeracy, functional skills.
  • ResourceThis course will support you to develop your personal maths or English skills at Level 2 with some extension activities to Level 3 in order to effectively support learners on a range of programmes of learning with maths and English skills up to level 2. It also provides ideas and relevant information about how to approach teaching each topic and reinforce effective practice. Links are provided to other useful teaching and learning resources.

8. Apprenticeship End-Point Assessment

  • Professional Standard 18: Apply appropriate and fair methods of assessment and provide constructive and timely feedback to support progression and achievement.
  • Topic: initial, formative, summative assessment.
  • Resource: Aimed at apprenticeship end-point assessors, this tool will help you: Self-assess against the skills, knowledge and experience needed by an end-point assessor; identify your immediate and long-term CPD needs; and access support and resources to start your CPD journey.

9. Introduction to Mentoring Programme

  • Professional Standard 20: Contribute to organisational development and quality improvement through collaboration with others.
  • Topic: Quality improvement strategies, coaching and mentoring colleagues
  • Resource: Available free to SET members, this video-based e-learning programme comprises four modules aimed at SET members with an optional final module aimed specifically at QTLS supporters. It provides approximately 12 hours of e-learning content and activities, some of which will be offline.

10. Maintaining and Updating Knowledge of Educational Research

  • Professional Standard 8: Maintain and update your knowledge of educational research to develop evidence based practice.
  • Topic: Educational research.
  • Resource: This site helps practitioners engage with and use research to develop their professional practice.
