Please join us for the first live webinar from our series on 'Teaching in the time of the coronavirus' with author and teacher, Geoff Petty. Here you will learn how to use a teaching method that does not rely on special resources, can be used to teach all but the most challenging content, which fosters active learning and independence in our students, yet provides learners with support.
This, and more, is provided by a structured approach Geoff calls "Independent Learning" (IL). In most cases it has a higher effectiveness than Resource Based Learning, or Computer-Based Learning and it is cheaper to provide. Also, it systematically develops real-life learning skills in students, preparing them for progression. In Geoff's experience it becomes a preferred teaching method: "If we weren’t isolating, I’d still recommend it," says Geoff.
"In Independent Learning (IL) students learn a topic which is defined by the teacher but is not taught. The teacher may or may not signpost resources. But support and monitoring are provided by students themselves, who also assess work in progress, but in the end each student’s learning is brieflyassessedby the teacher. IL can be used as a component of almost any course and no special resources are required, but it is not an easy teaching method to use. I’ve made all the mistakes, so I am uniquely qualified to help you avoid the elephant traps," adds Geoff.
