Mentoring

How to use this resource

If you are a trainee teacher interested in learning more about the benefits of having a mentor or a qualified teacher to offer advice and guidance about tackling new challenges and increasing responsibilities, the Society for Education and Training (SET) recommends the Centres for Excellence in Teacher Training (CETTs) Mentoring Compendium because it covers several relevant themes.

It is divided into sections with examples, checklists, research and links so you can access the all the information you need. It is suitable for a variety of contexts including adult and community learning (ACL), further education colleges, offender learning, the voluntary sector, work-based learning (WBL) and vocational areas.

CETTs has developed a wide selection of information, supporting resources, and training programmes around mentoring and coaching. These are available through the Excellence Gateway.

Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK), in collaboration with the Association of CETTs (ACETT - the national network of CETTs), produced a plain English guide and videos that illustrates best practice in teaching and learning in the sector. This document includes a section on mentoring, which explores the impact mentoring can have on professional teaching practice, illustrated by filmed case studies. Download the guide from the ACETT website.
