My QTLS experience: Cheryl Bertschi

What motivated you to undertake Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS)? 

I completed my level 5 Education and Training and became interested in making a more in-depth analysis of what I do and why. I wanted to delve further into the different approaches that may be used to ensure the students on my courses received the best learning experiences and opportunities to unlock their learning potential. 

How did you find the process and what did you like about it? 

I enjoyed the process as it enabled me to take the lead in my journey. I was able to make an initial analysis of what I do and why and from there find the correct sources to help me develop and find new techniques and resources.  

What has undertaking QTLS taught you about yourself? 

It has taught me that by critically reflecting on my practice, I can recognise what I do well and identify the areas I can improve and how to achieve this. 

What impact has QTLS had on your practice and learners? 

Achieving QTLS status has had a fundamental impact as I am more aware of the pedagogical approach, and I now ensure this is completely embedded in my practice. 

What impact has QTLS had on your organisation? 

Due to the QTLS process, I have made connections with external stakeholders which has impacted my organisation. I am also in a better position to mentor colleagues who are looking to progress further in their studies. 

What are you going to do next and how will you continue to develop your practice? 

I am undertaking the IQA qualification in January and then look to enrol on the advanced course. 

What advice would you give teachers/trainers who are thinking of undertaking QTLS? 

Undertaking QTLS is a fantastic opportunity to make a deep dive into your practice and improve areas of delivery for your learners.
