Advanced Teacher Status holders to be conferred Chartered Teacher Status

It was announced at the Society for Education and Training’s inaugural conference today that those who achieve Advanced Teacher Status (ATS) will be conferred with the Chartered College of Teaching’s Chartered Teacher designation.

ATS is the badge of advanced professionalism and mastery in the Further Education and Training Sector. It is conferred by the Education and Training Foundation (ETF) through the Society for Education and Training (SET).

The names of the initial 19 professionals to achieve ATS were announced at the SET Conference in Birmingham by Dan Williams, Chair of SET’s Management Board, in his welcome speech today. They will be the first people to hold both ATS and Chartered Teacher Status, when the latter is conferred by the Chartered College of Teaching in 2019.

Advanced Teacher Status recognises experienced professionals who can demonstrate:

  • mastery in teaching and/or training
  • an exemplary degree of subject knowledge in their area of professional expertise
  • effectiveness in working collaboratively to improve teaching standards amongst their peers or within their organisation

Today’s announcement further cements the parity of professional status between those teaching and training across all educational contexts.

David Russell, Education and Training Foundation Chief Executive, said: “We have worked closely with colleagues at the Chartered College of Teaching to ensure that those who achieve ATS will automatically be conferred Chartered Teacher status. Achieving ATS signals a commitment to driving forward teaching standards. The additional conferment of Chartered Teacher Status is a significant reward for those who bring their high levels of skill and commitment to teaching and training and help to promote high standards across the sector.”

Professor Dame Alison Peacock, Chief Executive of the Chartered College of Teaching, said: “We’re pleased that those who achieve ATS will also now be recognised with Chartered Teacher Status. We want to see expertise in teaching running through the DNA of teachers across the whole profession. As with our Chartered Teacher programme, ATS celebrates evidence-informed, high-quality teaching and will play an important role in raising the status of the profession.”

ATS launched in June 2017. It is open only to those who have already achieved Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. For further information please visit the ATS web section.
